How to choose a marketing agency for a local business
Most local businesses pick an agency on a good sales call and a nice-looking portfolio, then get a monthly report and no new customers. Here is how to pick one that actually moves the number that pays you.
Judge it on booked customers, not deliverables
A report, a "brand refresh," or a beautiful new website are deliverables. They are not results. Before you sign, get clear on the one metric you will both look at: booked jobs, appointments, or sales. If an agency steers the conversation toward impressions, reach, or "engagement," that is usually because those numbers are easier to move than revenue.
Speed to lead is non-negotiable
A lead that fills out a form is deciding right now, often on their phone, often comparing you to two competitors. The business that responds first usually wins. Ask exactly how fast a new lead gets contacted. "We follow up daily" loses to "within seconds" every time.
They should test, not guess
Ask how they decide which ad or landing page to run. A good answer involves testing multiple versions against real traffic and keeping the winner on the numbers. A weak answer is "we know what works" or "our designer made it." Nobody knows what works until it is tested on your traffic.
Watch for these red flags
- Long lock-in contracts up front. If the work is good, they should be willing to prove it first. Long contracts protect the agency, not you.
- Big setup fees. Often a way to make money before any results exist.
- No tracking, or "trust the platform dashboard." You should be able to see what a click actually turned into.
- Vague on who does the work. Know whether a senior person or an offshore junior actually runs your account.
- Fabricated or suspiciously perfect reviews. A wall of five-star reviews with no detail is a warning, not reassurance.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What is the single number we will judge this on in 90 days?
- How fast, exactly, does a new lead get contacted?
- How do you decide which page and ad to run — and can you show me a test?
- Can I see the tracking that ties a click to a booked customer?
- What is my commitment, and can I leave if it is not working?
- Is there a way to try it before I pay?
